The Sacrament of the Sick is for those who have a physical, spiritual, or psychological illness which is constant and needs prayer. Examples are a heart condition, diabetes, cancer, asthma, addiction, chronic pain, severe depression, or for those who are elderly and subject to illness. People of all ages who are Catholic may be anointed. The sign of the sacrament of the sick is the laying on of hands and the anointing with oil on the forehead and hands. The “laying on of hands” signifies calling on the power of the Holy Spirit. The oil for the sacrament is blessed by the Bishop on Holy Thursday. Oil has been an agent of healing and strength.
